hawaiian retreat

Large pocketing doors consisting of separate leaves for glass, screens, and louvers became moving walls. By opening all doors, the house was open to the Hawaiian fresh air, offering the illusion of relaxing outside while still providing all of the functional qualities of a home. During inclement weather, the doors can be closed, but because of the large expanses of glass it still maintains a connection to the outside.

The architects design a great room space with clerestory windows on all four sides of the building and a light shelf extending over 8 feet at the exterior and 3 feet at the interior. The custom light shelf acts as a shading device, while also providing a source of diffused light when sunlight shines through the windows bouncing upwards off of the shelf.
